A difference of divisions does not always play such a big role when it comes to cup matches, and games being determined over one tie. The weaker side on paper will always try their best to make it difficult for the other side. Looking at the other games in the Hungarian cup fourth round confirms this. Kisvárda - Pápa 3-4, Cigánd - Diosgyőr 3-4, ESMTK - Debrecen 1-2. Vidi knew that a difficult game lay ahead of them against Bekescsaba, with the home side enjoying good form, and as their manager, Andras Komjati said before the game, his side are targeting promotion to the first division.
The home side showed plenty of bravery in the opening moments, although there were no real efforts on goal in the first 15 minutes. It took a Sandor header on 16 minutes, which just avoided the Bekescsaba goal. Marcolini saw his header after 30 minutes produce a great save from Calatayud, who saved a shot heading towards the left post for a corner.
There were electrical problems in the tight home stadium, which saw two out of the four floodlights out of action in the opening minute of the second half. The match official decided that it was possible to play in conditions like this. The Bekescsaba stadium was illuminated once more as the other two lights returned. The biggest chance of the match arrived on 63 minutes. Gyurcso crossed for Zé Luis to head just wide of goal from close range. Gyurcso crossed three minutes later for Torghelle to flick on with his head, just arriving for Alvarez to shoot with his left foot powerfully just wide of the mark. The home side also showed that they were dangerous on the attack. They found Vinicius in the way or their shots went wide of Calatayud's goal. The match official blew for the end of 90 minutes, which resulted in 2 x 15 minutes extra time having to be played.
There was no real change to the pattern of play in extra time, with Vidi having more of the ball, but Bekescsaba did not only defend, as they came forward with confidence if they had the chance. Finally as most people were switching their thoughts to a penalty shootout, Torghelle and Zé Luis escaped their markers, with the former showing great unselfishness to find Zé Luis, who broke the deadlock to make it 1-0. The home side still had a chance to level in the 120th minute with a free kick, but the ball curled over from about 20 meters out. It was a true cup match, full of battle and all praise goes to Bekescsaba, who put up a good fight while also playing good football.
